LAUSANNE, Switzerland, LONCAT INDAH INDONESIA-October 15.
CHINA's rising talents took the spotlight at the 19th edition of the FINA World
Junior Diving Championships, held in Adelaide, Australia, from October 8-13,
2012. The squad from the diving powerhouse claimed 10 titles out of the 14 at
stake and occupied the majority of podiums. A total 220 divers from 34
countries performed at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre.
The competition featured both experienced and fresh faces of the diving world stage. Among the stars, Great Britain's Olympic bronze medallist Thomas Daley and team mate Jack Laugher brought home five medals: the duo captured gold in the 3m synchro, beating the Russian and Australian pairs. Daley also triumphed in his signature event, the 10m event (Group A), ahead of two Chinese -- Jian Yang and Aisen Chen, second and third respectively -- while Laugher was the winner in the 3m, edging up-and-comer Jianfeng Peng (CHN) and local hope Darcy Taylor. In the 1m event, the Chinese was stronger, finishing ahead of Laugher, who settled for silver. American Michael Hixon secured the bronze.
Among women, the only non-Chinese victory belonged to Gracia Leydon Mahoney (USA) in the 3m (Group A). China's Qulin Zheng placed second and British Hannah Starling, third. Home hero and Olympic silver medallist in the 10m platform Brittany Broben gained two bronze medals in the 1m and 10m events (Group A). Chinese Jiao Liu and Yaqi Chen finished 1-2 in the 1m and Chen earned another silver in the 10m, which was won by compatriot Shengping Wu. Yajie Si (CHN) performed brilliantly in the 10m (Group B), taking top spot ahead of team mate Jie Lian while Olympic silver medallist Alejandra Orozco from Mexico claimed the bronze.
